Hermit Crab Races...another charming New England oddity

Cool, grey, windy - ideal weather for putting the wind to the sails at the Gloucester Schooner Festival! We set out with Sherie, Ben, and Elliot to explore the quaint seashore town of Gloucester (location of the book/movie "A Perfect Storm"). We toured a schooner, walked the piers, Charlie raced a hermit crab in a children's competition, and we ate our first lobster (unbelievable, we know) since arriving in New England.

The crew poses in front of a giant buoy.

Touring the Bluenose II, a 1960s replica of a 1920s schooner. Charlie takes hold of the wheel -- ahoy matey!
Charlie gazes skeptically at her entry in the hermit crab races.
In a fit of creativity, we named him "Hermie." He turned out to be not much of a racer.
One more trip down the pier before we head for home.
