a week at the beach, oh outer banks, we love you so

Wonderful wondrous week at the beach. Wonderful friends, wonderful weather, wonderful food and drink, truly wonderful kids. Charlie sobbed real tears of sadness the night we got back because vacation was over - I felt her pain. Our thanks to the Heywood and Buxton families for being such awesome friends and truly spectacular vacation pals. Where are we going next year?

Below are too many pictures, and they aren't even all of them. How was I to choose? These are in a very loose order - sorry if it's too discombobulated!

The Players:
The Buxton Family: Max, Hilary, and Sam
The Heywoods - Sherie, Ben, Elliot, Samantha, and Julia
The Johnston Family: you know the crew - Juliet, Mindy, Chris, and Charlie
This is how Juliet ate all her meals after a very scary and unfortunate fall in her strap-on high chair on our first morning.

The Men
They put together puzzles. They grill. They ponder the twilight with drinks in hand.
Julia - puzzle helper extraordinaire.
Their creations - cuddly kitten and the "marriage wrecker" circular puzzle:

The Ladies
Power in numbers!

The Kids
So awesome, all of them. Got along great, made each other laugh. Not to brag too much, but we are all raising great kids.
Many dance parties were held - sadly, the Mylie Cyrus song "Party in the USA" will be stuck in my memory as the week's anthem.
Sherie became my best friend 25 years (!!!) ago this summer. And now, these lovelies are great pals. It makes me teary just to think about it.
I only called Julia "Juliet" a dozen times - not too bad, I think.

The beach - Oh, the beach
Renting a house directly on the beach is always the way to go.

The Sam-Castle
Not to be outdone by the "Max Mound"

And the Charlie....? No clever sand name here.
Beach wildlife of all kinds!
Clear (non-stinging) jellyfish
Minnows a-plenty
Sand dabs
Super cute little green tree frogNot shown: a little fox, long-eared rabbits, sand crabs, and dolphins.

Those waves! The glorious and rejuvenating waves
Chris rides them while Max looks on in awe (I'm sure).

The Pool
Many thanks go to John and Peggy Heywood for sharing!
Check out this cool panorama - can you find the FOUR Charlies?
The Sunrise
When your baby gets up every day before sunrise, it makes sense to wake the whole family to see it from the beach.
Those Heywood girls also get up early!
The Food
I wish that I had pictures of all the amazing food that our friends made and the meals we shared. We ate (and drank) very, very well.

For their night to cook, the Heywoods served us on the patio. Nothing goes better with jalapeno poppers than fresh sea air.

Sherie and Ben make a mean non-alcoholic watermelon daiquiri.
Kite-flying!
Max and his high-flying kite.

The Whole Awesome Crew
Thanks for a truly fantastic vacation, friends!
